India Part 1

I have no idea how many parts it might take to tell my India story.  I think I'll start by posting parts of my journal and pictures...and I am sure that I will end with my thoughts and reflections on how my trip has impacted me.  I will just copy straight from my journal, so you're going to read everything just as I experienced it.  Hope you enjoy this little snapshot of my trip to the other side of the world (literally!)
Waiting at the gate...anticipation mounting!

December 31, 2011

It's officially day 2 of our trip, but since I'm wearing the same clothes I left Indy in, I feel like it's just been one VERY long day.  I might be mentally starting to lose it already.  I knew the trip would be hard, but had no idea exactly how hard a 14 hour flight would be.  Seven hours in, I still hadn't slept even though I was exhausted.  I finally used an airplane bathroom for the first time in my life (the whole idea has never appealed to me so I've avoided it until now.  But with this long a flight, I had no options!)  I was finally able to doze off a little, but my sleep was very uncomfortable and broken.  There are SO many kids and babies on this flight, and all night it seemed like there was crying of some sort.
I'm not thrilled about the middle seat, but I'll survive

We were served 3 meals on the plane.  The first was chicken curry (not too bad), plain yogurt (not too good), and some sort of grainy, sweet, pudding-ish thing (not my fave).  About 9 hours into the flight we got fruit and

cucumber sandwiches.  And then about 12 hours into it we had omelets with potatoes and some kind of cake--very savory and pretty tasty.  There was also fruit and a bran muffin.  At this point I feel pretty sick and just can't wait for the travels to be over!

Right now I feel completely overwhelmed with the travel.  But when I think about where we're going and what we'll be doing I'm very excited.  I pray that I will be able to remain flexible on this trip and to be willing to try new things.  I verse that has kept coming back to me during our trip is 2 Corinthians 5:17 "If anyone is in Christ He is a new creation.  The old has passed, the new has come."  I know that this verse refers to the change in us before Christ vs. our life with Him, but I know that someone the things I am about to see and experience will make a new creation out of me.

Birthday picture with the kids...
Today is a special day!  I've been preparing for this for several months and can't believe it's finally here.  Here's the story of how I got to this moment...

Mid-way through our Florida vacation this past summer, we got a call.  It was the kind of call that none of us ever wants to get. "There's been an accident and the news is not good..." my dad told me.  My uncle had been jogging Sunday morning before church and was struck by a truck and killed instantly.  In one instant, the lives of my aunt, cousins, and extended family were drastically changed.  My Uncle Garry's funeral was so deeply impacting to those of us who were there.  There was story after story about his sense of humor, his business skills, his generosity, his humility, and the way that he used his strengths and gifts to help others.  In the following days, Matt and I had many conversations about what we had learned from Uncle Garry's life.  Above all, we want to be people who, like him, finish well the race we are running in this life.  I want to live out 2 Timothy 4:7 which says, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."
In the days and weeks that followed, I found this verse directing me in different decisions I was making.  It was shortly after the funeral when a friend mentioned to me an upcoming mission trip to India that our church was taking.  I had been looking for several months at the different mission trips offered, but always seemed to find a reason that it wouldn't work.  This time, though, I had a new perspective.  If this was something I felt that God wanted me to do, I needed to find a way to make it work.  Matt was in whole-hearted agreement with me taking the trip (he will get his turn next year!) and I signed up to travel to Orissa, India where we would work and teach in The Shelter, an orphanage for girls.  The trip was scheduled to leave on my birthday...December 30.  At first I thought that was a bummer, but then I started thinking more.  What an incredible way to mark my birthday--and what if I created a "bucket list" of sorts?  Forty things that I'd like to do or accomplish between by 39th and 40th birthdays?  The more I thought about it, the more I fell in love with this idea.  And so my 40 by 40 list was born.  It was more difficult than I thought it would be.  Practically speaking, not all 40 things could cost a lot of money--after all, we are a family of six!!  But I wanted to make a list of meaningful things that I would complete in this next year.  So...without further ado, my 40 by 40 list:

Project: Grandpa's Deck

Grandpa finally agreed to let us come and help put a small deck on the back of his house (you know, so that it will be safe to open the back door!!)  Since Quinn and Matt spent a week building decks/porches on their workcamp this summer, they were deemed "mostly qualified" to help with this task.  We ALL ended up helping in one way or another...hauling materials, measuring, cutting, hammering, and tightening bolts.  We did it all!!  Thursday was VERY rainy, so all that really was accomplished was getting the materials, but by Saturday night we had met Matt's goal.  We got far enough that Grandpa can easily (verdict still out on exactly HOW easy it will be) lay the decking and put the rails up.  Here we go...from start to finish:

My Favorite People...

We had an awesome Family Fun Day today...it's been WAY too long since we had a day like this.  We started with a lunch of grilled cheese and soup (perfect on this chilly fall day) and then headed to Ft. Ben for a hike through the woods.  After that we headed to our favorite orchard for yummy caramel apples and cider.  Once we got back home we had a perfect backyard fire in the firepit...Matt & I read while kids raked leaves and played with the neighbors.  Dinner of tacos and s'mores topped off the night.  Ahhh...
HUGE leaf that Millie found

We are just about halfway!!

"ASweetheart Tree!!  Just like in Little House on the Prairie..."  (says Millie)

Don't let these kids EVER tell you they don't like their siblings.  This might be sappy, but it warms my heart.

Big Day!!

It's baptism day!!  We are so happy that Millie has decided to follow Jesus and is taking this step to publicly share her decision.

I remember a snowy December evening in 2007, just a week or so after my mom had passed away, when Zane prayed to ask Jesus into his heart (we had recently had lots of discussions about Grandma and heaven).  Millie (like any typical younger sister), repeated all of the words that Zane prayed.  We were eagerly awaiting Daddy's return from work so that we could share the good news.  As soon as we heard the garage door, though, Millie raced to the door ahead of everyone else.  With the enthusiasm of a player who'd just scored a Superbowl touchdown, she threw her arms in the air and shouted, "I'M GOING TO HEAVEN!!"  I was pretty sure that as an almost 4 year old she didn't fully comprehend what Zane had done, but she was adamant that she had.

Fast-forward to 7 years old...One Sunday morning Millie prayed with her Sunday School leaders and this time we were sure that she understood what she was doing.  It was just a couple of months later that she decided that she wanted to be baptized.  This is what Millie wrote about her decision (this is the testimony that I'll read this morning just before she's baptized): "I want to be baptized today because I love God and I want to live for Him.  I think that being baptized will show others that I love God and will remind me every day to read my Bible and do what He wants me to do.  A Bible verse that is special to me is I Corinthians 1:9: 'God, who has called you into fellowship with His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.'  To me, this verse means that God wants me to be in His group of friends and that He will never leave me out."

As a parent, there are several things that I'm thankful for today:
  • Jesus' love for each of us, especially for Millie
  • Traci, who has a genuine love for kids and who is baptizing Millie this morning
  • Family sharing in this special day
  •  A church family that is passionate about helping my kids follow Jesus
For me, the sorrowful part of today is that my mom isn't here to share in it, but I think it is super special that Millie has her own cheering section rejoicing from heaven--led by Grandma, Great Grandpa Larson, and Uncle Garry, I'm sure!!

How Deep

Millie is going to be celebrating her baptism day in just a couple of short days.  One of the things I'm working on for her this week is a CD of the favorite worship songs from each of the members of our family, along with a couple of others that seem meaningful for this special occasion.  I've been working on it for the last couple of days and as I've listened to one song in particular, I have been reminded of just how unworthy I am, and just how great God's love is for me...and for Millie...and for you...

How deep the Father's love for us,
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure
How great the pain of searing loss,
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the chosen One,
Bring many sons to glory
Behold the Man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice,
Call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that left Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished
I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom
